Bounced E-mail

Bounced e-mails can hurt the smtp server reputation.  There are two types of bounces.

Soft-Bounce
  • Doesn't effect the reputation
  • Some factors of why this happens:
    • receiver has a full e-mail box
    • out of office
    • e-mail is too large
    • server is down or offline
Hard-Bounce
  • This is serious and can hurt the smtp reputation
  • Some factors of why this happens:
    • invalid e-mail address
    • non-existent e-mail
    • blocked e-mail
How to reduce the bounces?

When sending through mailister, check bouces e-mail folder.  System is setup to auto detect bounces.  Check to make sure.  Other checks can be made by looking at logs through rspamd or /var/log/mail.log using tail -f /var/log/mail.log
